Bridge Workshop - "Service Life Design of Highway Bridges"
To see presentation, click here
To date, the majority of instances where explicit service life design procedures were implemented has been limited to signature bridges and other projects where extended service lives (i.e., greater than 100 years) are specified by the owner. Many transportation agencies have recognized the importance of implementing service life design for typical highway bridges; however, no US specification or standard was available that could easily be implemented by owners and designers.. This changed with NCHRP Project 12-108 and the development of the AASHTO Guide Specification for Service Life Design.
This workshop will provide a brief history of service life design, show the background and development of the Guide Specification, and discuss the different approaches to service life design available for bridge engineers and owners.
Presenters:
Thomas P. Murphy, PhD, PE, SE- Vice President & Chief Technical Officer, Modjeski & Masters, Inc
Travis A. Hopper, PE - Structural Engineer, Modjeski & Masters, Inc.
BIOS:
Thomas P. Murphy, PhD, PE, SE - Dr. Murphy is a Senior Vice President, the Chief Technical Officer and Chairman of the Board of Modjeski and Masters. His professional experience has included the analysis, design, and detailing of a variety of bridges including cable-stayed, suspension, arch, truss, and girder bridges with special emphasis on seismic analysis and design. Dr. Murphy has been involved in numerous research projects and was the Principal Investigator for NCHRP 12-108 which led to the adoption of AASHTO’s Guide Specifications for Service Life Design of Highway Bridges. He has led investigations into several structural failures and bridge collapses.
Travis A. Hopper, PE -Travis is an engineer at Modjeski and Masters who joined the firm in 2015. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from New Mexico State University in 2013, and a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Penn State University in 2015. He has worked on several forensic investigation and research projects. His background includes research in concrete cracking, long-term durability of concrete, and service life modeling and design of bridge components. He helped to develop the AASHTO Guide Specification for Service Life Design of Highway Bridges as part of NCHRP Project 12-108.
