Dr. Jim Martin, Wake County School Board
"Facilities and Capital Planning in the Wake County Public School System"
Bio: Dr. Jim Martin received a BA in Chemistry and Biology from Goshen College in 1986, a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry from Indiana University in 1990, and did post doctoral research at the University of Paris and Iowa State University. In 1994 Dr. Martin came to Wake County where he is a Professor of Chemistry at North Carolina State University. Dr. Martin leads an internationally-recognized research program in Inorganic Chemistry, teaches freshman chemistry through advanced graduate courses, and provides chemistry curriculum development and training for high school chemistry teachers. For his work as a teacher and research scholar, Dr. Martin has received the CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation, and been named a Cottrell Scholar by the Research Corporation of Science Advancement. From 2011 to the present he was elected to represent District 5 on Wake County’s Board of Education. Dr. Martin quickly became known as a passionate advocate for students and teachers, working to provide access to high quality, diverse learning opportunities for all students. On the Board of Education he has provided leadership as chair of the Board of Education’s policy committee, currently chairs the facilities committees, and has served as Vice Chair and Chair of the Board.
